Penile implants are effective impotence treatment that can be used by men who suffer from erectile dysfunction, when they do not respond to other treatments

What are impotence penile implants?
Penile implants are rods that are surgically inserted into the penis and that can help a man achieve an erection and perform a normal sexual act.
Depending on the type of the implant (malleable or inflatable) the erection is either permanent or achieved only when needed; in the case of inflatable implants a small pump is inserted in the scrotum and when squeezed, it inflates the surgically inserted into the penis implant, thus resulting in an erection.
What are the different types of penile implants?
In general the implants can be divided into malleable and inflatable.
The inflatable implants can be further categorized into two-piece and three-piece implants.

The malleable, semi-rigid implants have no mechanical parts, which means that they will not malfunction or break at a later time and can be done during day surgery.
The inflatable implants consist of two cylinders and a pump and in the case of the three-piece implant a small container with sterile solution is inserted into the abdomen.
How effective are penile implants?
The penile implants are extremely effective – they produce good results and firm erection in almost 95% of the cases; in comparison the pharmaceutical drugs have approximately 70% success rate.
Are penile implants safe?
You should realize that inserting the implants is a surgical procedure, which carries all the risks that are associated with surgery and mainly the risk of infection.
The malleable implants surgery is the least risky since they are inserted using a simple surgical procedure, but in all cases the recovery period is from four to six weeks and some men complain of pain during this period.
In most cases of serious infections the implants have to be surgically removed. There is also the risk of malfunction; these cases are rare, but in case of malfunction, again, surgical procedure is needed for the device to be replaced or repaired.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using penile implants?
The main advantage is the great success rate – penile implants are by far the most successful impotence treatment, but there are certain disadvantages as well.
First of all, they require surgical procedure, which can lead to complications and infections. In the case of rigid implants the erection is permanent, which has the advantage of being able to perform sexual act at any time, but the disadvantage of having an erect penis at all times.
In the case of inflatable implants, the three-piece one produces the most "natural" erection and in all cases these devices are extremely easy to use and produce an erection almost immediately.
What precautions should be taken when considering penile implants?
You should be aware of the lengthy (four to six weeks) recovery period that is sometimes associated with pain that you have to endure and during which antibiotics are administered.
You should avoid any exercise or physical activities for at least a month after the surgery and during this period in the case of inflatable implants you should also make sure that the pump remains in the scrotum during the healing period.
Before agreeing to the surgery, make sure that you are informed of all the costs involved since in the case of inflatable implants they can be quite high. If there are any complications or signs of infection, an immediate medical attention should be sought.
Keep in mind that in the case of semi-rigid (malleable) implants constant pressure is applied on the inside of the penis and this can cause injury; after impotence implants’ surgery tight clothes should not be worn since they can cause irritation.
