Alcohol and Impotence

It has been known for a long time that alcohol increases the desire, but how about performance?

Is there any scientific proof though that alcohol can cause impotence?

Well, unfortunately here comes the bad news – the heavy consumption of alcohol might cause impotence.

Doctors and dieticians today would actually recommend the drink of a glass of red wine daily and this might have something to do with the fact that red wine contains antioxidants which are great for you.

But if you are hard liquor lover or you hardly ever stop at one glass of wine, then there is a good chance that you might not just experience erectile problems, but alcohol rehab may also be on the horizon as well. Unfortunately, erectile dysfunction effects more than just the person who has it.

Studies have shown that the long-term abuse of alcohol can cause damage of the nerves and inhibit the transmitting of the impulses from the pituitary gland to the genitals, which leads to the inability to get an erection.

Another possible result of alcohol abuse might be the direct damage to the nerves of the penis, which can also be responsible for not achieving an erection or getting an erection which does not last long enough for successful sexual intercourse. These are permanent damages and should not be confused by the "temporary impotence" caused by consuming large quantities of alcohol once off.

Another case is the alcohol-drug interactions: many of the synthetic pills have warnings against taking them in conjunction of alcohol, if these warnings are ignored this might lead to temporary impotence. This is mostly due to the fact that alcohol might increase the undesired side effects of these drugs and impotence might be one of them.

Unfortunately the heavy alcohol abuse can cause irreversible damages and thus lead to impotence that will be experienced even after long periods of sobriety.

Apart from the direct cause of erectile problems the prolonged consumption of large quantities of alcohol will inevitably lead to various diseases and conditions and poor overall health, which in turn can lead to impotence.

Many men who abuse alcohol are also smokers and some are illegal substances users and all these factors will inevitably lead to erectile problems; the lack of regular exercise will also contribute to the problem.

If you are a heavy drinker and experience erectile problems, consult your doctor immediately and he or she will advise you on the best course of action, but most certainly the first step that you will have to take is to stop the alcohol abuse.

There are various treatments that can then be considered, even if there is a permanent damage to the nerves: after physical examination some of the latest syntactic drugs, such as generic Viagra, generic Cialis or generic Levitra might be prescribed to you or your doctor might recommend some of the older treatments like penis pumps, penile injections, of penile implants. Another option to try is Natural ED Remedies, such as VigaPlus, CaliPlus or Niagra.

All these treatments have their pros and cons, but in most cases impotence is a manageable sexual dysfunction and the sooner a man switches to healthier lifestyle the faster he is likely to recover.

If you take into account all the other damages that excessive alcohol consumption can cause to your health, then giving up the "bottle" is certainly a smart move.

  1. I have consumed a lot of alcohol, now my testosterone is low. says:

[...] Hi, Mike. Your low testosterone level is almost for sure caused by alcohol abuse. Imagine that your liver is a muscle. When you exercise – the muscle enlarges and makes it easier for you o lift weights. The same process goes when you drink too much – your liver enlarges and produces more enzymes to break down the alcohol and to get it out of your system. The more you drink the more enzymes your liver produces. It also breaks down testosterone to remove it from your system too, but now, when your liver is ’stronger’ – it removes to much of testosterone and its low level affects your libido and reduces your sex drive.
